The authors of the original paper thank the discusser (Dallo 2020) for his interest in their paper. The expected largest eroded particle size was one of several factors considered in the design of the equipment (Li et al. 2020). The perforations in the end platens were set to be several times larger to enable free passage of the eroded particles and prevent clogging. The perforations were also set small enough to prevent the soil that does not erode from squeezing or passing through the perforations. Wan’s (2006) data helped establish an upper boundary and typical sizes of eroded particles in gap-graded soils so the design could proceed. The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page.
